Michael Macher

November 2025 | #lecturer

Michael Macher, Junior Professor in the Creative Computing program and an alumnus of our university, took part in this year's E³UDRES² International Engagement Circus at our Belgian partner institution UC Leuven-Limburg (UCLL). He returned with many impressions, new contacts, and renewed enthusiasm. In this interview, he explains what makes the format unique and why he recommends participation to other teaching staff.

What motivated you to take part in the International Engagement Circus?

Macher: In addition to the international focus, I was particularly interested in the format itself. The aim is not to develop finished solutions, but to generate ideas and impulses that can later be further developed in other formats – such as the Hackathon, the Living Lab, or the Design Thinking Week. My role as a coach was to support students in exploring different lines of thought and in shaping potential, tailor-made challenges.

The first part of the Engagement Circus included visits to the EU Parliament and to companies – such as Corda Campus, one of the region's largest technology and innovation hubs. In the second part, students worked on concrete creative ideas in workshops. For me as a coach, this was also an exciting experience, as the focus was deliberately on developing the challenge idea rather than working on the solution.

What impressed you most?

Macher: I was impressed by how motivated and open the people there are. Everyone involved is genuinely eager to work together and make things happen. Direct contact and personal interaction are incredibly valuable – something that is difficult to replicate digitally. I know few comparable formats that combine inspiration, exchange, and authentic practical relevance in such a meaningful way.

What would you recommend to other teaching staff at our university?

Macher: If the topic interests you, take the opportunity and get involved – it would be a pity not to. Participation integrates very well into everyday work, and you meet many interesting and friendly people. Ideally, teaching collaborations or joint projects may arise from it. It is simply a great opportunity to build networks, discover new perspectives, and further develop one's teaching in a sustainable and engaging way.

Next: Hackathon

From 2 to 4 December, the next E³UDRES² Hackathon will take place at USTP – this time focusing on “Connecting Europe by Shaping Regional Identities in our Workplace,” in which Michael Macher also took part.
