Sometimes, the most profound changes start not with a grand gesture, but with a simple decision to get involved. For Miguel Pérez Hernández, an International Business student at Saxion, that decision led him to the 2026 European Student Assembly (ESA) in Strasbourg, France. The ESA is far more than just a conference. It is where 250 students from all across the continent come together in a vibrant simulation of the European Parliament. The institutions are making now decisions that will fundamentally shape the future. Miguel made an active contribution because he strongly believes it is crucial that youth is as engaged as possible. To him, being part of the change goes without saying.
A Bridge Between Tech and Policy
What drew Miguel’s attention was the European sovereignty in technology. Being an intern at ASML in project management and finance, he understands better the impact of EU policy and international relations in European tech. Before the assembly even started, he spent months collaborating online with a diverse team to draft policy recommendations.
The energetic experience lasted three days in France and the schedule was packed. The early starts led to meaningful debates with colleagues that helped them polish their recommendations. One of the most iconic moments for Miguel was the opportunity to engage directly with a Member of the European Parliament. Not only could the students ask critical questions, but they also shared their fears for the future. They made sure their voices reached the ears of those in power.
The Beauty of Diversity
Even though the policy work was challenging, it all paid off after all the significant social network he made. A pleasant surprise for Miguel was the diversity of participants. He expected a closed circle of people, coming maybe from similar fields, but what he found instead was a refreshing mix of nationalities and academic backgrounds. This unique environment introduced him to people he might never have met otherwise. This contributed to Miguel’s understanding of how to write policy that accounts for the needs of all European states.
A Call to Action
When thinking back on the whole experience, Miguel describes the assembly in three words: energetic, engaging, and fun. He now most definitely encourages more students to step into these spaces because this is where youth voices are often missing. To any student hesitant about applying, Miguel has a simple message: "Just do it". Whether you are a political enthusiast or simply someone who wants to be better informed, the European Student Assembly offers a chance to dive deep into what can be changed in our world. As Miguel puts it, our future is being written right now. It is up to us to make sure it is a future we helped create.
