On Saturday, 3 October 2026, Saxion University of Applied Sciences will open its doors for Saxion Technology Day in Enschede. Part of the Dutch Weekend van de Wetenschap (Science Weekend), the event invites visitors of all ages to discover modern technology through hands-on workshops, experiments and demonstrations.
This year, E³UDRES² will add a European perspective to the programme, bringing the knowledge and expertise of its European partners closer to the local community in Enschede.
MEET E³UDRES² ACROSS EUROPE
Visitors will be able to discover E³UDRES² partner institutions through a series of short videos. Colleagues from across the alliance will introduce themselves, share what they work on and offer a glimpse into the different areas of expertise found across Europe.
An E³UDRES² question box will make this experience interactive. Visitors can leave a question for one of the colleagues featured in the videos, creating a direct connection between the local community in Enschede and E³UDRES² partners across Europe.
In this way, European collaboration becomes something visitors can experience locally: connecting people and ideas across borders.
CONNECTING SAXION ROBOTICS RESEARCH WITH EUROPE
Saxion will also bring European research collaboration to life through robotics and mechatronics. Abeje Mersha, Professor (lector) of Smart Mechatronics and Robotics at Saxion, leads the E³UDRES² Prospective Applied Research Center of Excellence I²RS: Intelligent Integral Robotic Systems.
I²RS brings together researchers and experts from E³UDRES² partner institutions to advance intelligent robotic systems, combining expertise in areas such as autonomous robots, artificial intelligence, human interaction, and cognitive mechatronics. With Saxion as the lead institution, the center connects European knowledge with regional challenges and opportunities.
During Technology Day, Saxion’s Smart Mechatronics and Robotics Research Group will contribute a hands-on workshop, giving children, parents and other curious visitors the opportunity to experience robotics and mechatronics up close.
Together, the I²RS research collaboration, the Saxion workshop and the contributions from E³UDRES² partners show how regional expertise and European knowledge can connect through research, technology and shared experiences.
WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT?
Saxion Technology Day is designed for anyone who is curious about technology, from children and families to other interested visitors. Throughout the day, visitors can explore a wide variety of workshops, experiments and demonstrations.
The programme includes opportunities to experience sports and other activities in virtual reality, learn to programme with LEGO Mindstorm, build a bridge over a river simulator, meet a robot dog, decipher secret messages and create your own gadget. Previous editions have also included activities such as building robots, analysing fingerprints and experimenting with different forms of technology.
Together with the E³UDRES² activities, this gives visitors the opportunity not only to discover technology, but also to see how knowledge, research and ideas connect Enschede with partners and communities across Europe.
