E³UDRES² is organizing its first International Citizen Science conference at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, Portugal, from 29th to 30th June 2023. The conference aims to provide new citizen scientists with a comprehensive overview of the field and its programme was designed to provide a platform for E³UDRES² researchers to come together and share their knowledge on citizen science, their best practices and their results.
On the first day of the conference, there will be two keynote sessions. The first one by Cristina Luís, a Portuguese researcher that has been involved in several projects and initiatives in citizen science, who will provide a beginner friendly introduction to the field and an overview of the history of citizen science in Portugal. The second one by researcher Joana Lobo Antunes, also a lecturer in science communication and the founder of the Portuguese Science Communicators Network. She will share her extensive knowledge on how to better communicate and engage society in research.
During the first day all the participants will also have hands-on opportunities to help them develop their own projects, namely: i) an interactive session, where experienced researchers in citizen science will share some strategies and will be available to answer questions from the participants on how they can better engage citizens in their work; ii) a workshop, titled “Fostering good conversation. The Use of Art of Hosting for Citizen Science”, run by researcher Michaela Moser, from St. Polten University of Applied Sciences, where a set of facilitation techniques will be presented.
The second day of the conference will be fully dedicated to the oral presentations of the selected abstracts. On both days the programme includes a poster session, where selected authors from E³UDRES² alliance will showcase their own citizen science projects. The conferenced received over 20 submissions of abstracts, from researchers from the alliance, from which some were selected as oral presentations, some others selected to be communicated as posters.
