On 22 September 2026, Fulda UAS officially opened the exhibition “Unissued Diplomas - Unterbrochene Bildungswege in der Ukraine” (Interrupted Educational Paths in Ukraine).
The exhibition commemorates Ukrainian students whose lives and educational paths were cut short by the war and who never had the chance to receive their diplomas. The Unissued Diplomas initiative was started by Ukrainian students in 2023 and has since been shown in different countries, raising awareness of the ongoing war and its impact on people’s lives and education in Ukraine.
In Fulda, the exhibition is complemented by perspectives from the three Ukrainian E³UDRES² associated partner universities, Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National University of Cherkasy, Cherkasy State Business College and Sumy State University, giving insights into what studying, teaching and university life look like during the war.
The opening ceremony brought together different perspectives from Fulda UAS President Prof. Dr Karim Khakzar, Head of the International Office Julia-Sophie Rothmann, and Dariia Sudzylovska, a Ukrainian student from Dnipro who came to Fulda in 2022 and is now studying International Business and Management at Fulda UAS.
One of the key messages from the opening was the importance of not allowing the war to fade into the background. The contributions also highlighted what can be learned from the resilience of the Ukrainian partner universities and served as a reminder of something that can easily be taken for granted: the privilege of being able to study in peace. As Julia-Sophie Rothmann put it, “To be able to study in peace is already incredibly valuable.”
This was also reflected in Dariia’s personal experience. While continuing her education and building a life in Fulda, her parents remain in Dnipro. She shared how regularly checking her phone for news and wondering whether they are safe remains part of her life. Looking to the future, she expressed her hope that challenges and conflicts can be resolved through diplomacy rather than war.
The exhibition can be visited until 17 October 2026 at the University Library on the Fulda UAS campus.
